DMZ started out in 2003 as a jam-band by friends Zed Brookes, Dean Carter (both ex-members of Hamilton band Step Chant Unit), and Mark Griffiths. However, in the process of recording all their jams on computer, they managed to come up with dozens of coherent instrumental pieces, some of which were edited down to become the 2007 Ampersand album.
