Judge Hoffman were a seven-piece band who won the nationwide P and O Battle of the Bands in 1972. In the Waikato final the band beat Rasputin (2nd), Parson Brown, Back Alley, Seed and four other bands. They won the national final on 4 November 1972.

On Labour weekend 1972 the band broke the world non-stop playing record by performing for 72 hours at Hamilton's Tabla 2 nightclub, located at 30 Barton Street. They were the resident band at Tabla 2, following the departure of Mandrake.
