Son of a German shoemaker, Malachi came to NZ in 1987 and worked as a shoe shine boy in Te Awamutu before being discovered by the band passed out in a McDonalds drive thru. He learned to sing English by watching Elton John videos out the back of his uncle’s adult shop.

Cappy was born in the coal-mining town of Kilthaven. Little is known about his early years, no records detail his education or employment.
