To generate revenue, from 1989 Contact 89FM sold "Subcards" that enabled listeners to enter competitions, vote in the Top 13, and obtain discounts at various shops. For most of the 1990s these were sponsored by Metropolis Caffe, but in 1996 it was sponsored by Rocket Espresso Lounge, and 1998 by the Waikato Students Union. The 1998 subcard was still valid after Contact became UFM in 1998.
