Paul Trenwith was a founding member of the Hamilton County Bluegrass Band. Trenwith was Hamilton born and raised, attending primary school in Te Rapa and then Fairfield College. As a boy he played ukulele, before taking up the banjo. His banjo playing was inspired by the picking style of Earl Scruggs. He has released an album, Bluegrass Picking, which includes songs written (or co-written) by him over the previous 40 years.

Following the split of Hamilton County Bluegrass Band, Trenwith recorded two albums with his wife Colleen Trenwith; Fresh from the Country (1976) and Brand New Day (1986). Two other albums were released as Paul and Colleen Trenwith and Friends, Gospel (1979) and Now to the King (1987).

He also plays in the Trenwith Boys, with is sons Mike (dobro), Jeremy (guitar and bass), Sam (drums and guitar) and Tim (bass). His sons have played in Radiator, Broken Harmonium and Late 80's Mercedes.
