Amy Racecar formed in Napier in 2001 and subsequently moved to Hamilton.

Fueled by a no-show at a high profile venue in November, rumors started circulating that the band had broken up. These rumors we're put to rest in Jan 2009 when the band booked a practice space at 3 phase studios.
In February 2009, new rumors stared circulating that the band may change their name to "Amy Race Motokā" inspired by their maori history. Additionally, it is said that a musician going by the name of "Fagan Son Of Theo" has joined the band to perform the haka as part of the group's repetoire .
