''Steaknife'' was formed in 1989 by [[Stu Schmidt]], Droid ([[Andrew Schmidt]]), [[Marcel Gyde]] (drums), and [[Scott MacFarlane]] (guitar/ vocals). The band supported ''SPUD'' at Auckland venue ''Venue''. [[Steve McLennan]] joined the band on guitar late in the band's existence, with he, ''Gyde'' and ''Schmidt'' going on to form [[Zooper]]. ''Day Is Gone'', recorded by the first lineup, was released on [[The Weird Lode]] compilation of Paeroa descended post-punk groups.
