Gareth Schott is the main songwriter and guitarist in Hamilton-based recording band sink \ sink and serves as songwriter and guitarist for Ancient Tapes.
sink \ sink released their debut EP Center Folds (via childrenplay records, UK) in July 2011. Their debut album The Darkest Dark Goes was released by Feedback Loop Label (Portugal) in 2012. The follow up, 'a lone cloudburst' was released by Already Dead Records in 2013. The second album was produced, mixed and mastered by Sean Erin Lynch of Conway.
sink \ sink emerged from Hamilton band Laughter in the Mainsail, whose first line up comprised of Jamie Dryden (vocals) and Alan Deare (bass), Gareth Schott on guitar and Greg Thomas on drums. They disbanded in November 2010, with Dryden and Deare forming Blood Pops in 2011, with Schott retaining the name sink \ sink.
In 2013 Schott and Dryden released a spoken-word EP as Cautionary Tales for Children[1] on Rob Shirlow's Gravel Streak Records.
Schott has collaborated with Alicia Merz of birds of passage on several songs and also contributed a song to the Christchurch fund raiser compilation album curated by birds of passage, Tomorrow's Conversations.
Prior to sink \ sink, Schott played guitar live with Auckland-based singer songwriter Charlotte Johansen, together with Jon Postlethwaite and Mark McGeady of Hamilton band The Postlethwaites. Schott, Jon Postlethwaite, Mark McGeady, together with Jessica Boyd, also very briefly comprised Adam Killer, a ska/punk band.
Schott put sink \ sink on indefinite hiatus when Ancient Tapes began in March 2014. The band released an EP in Feb 2015 (Hummingbird EP)[2]. Ancient Tapes ran until May 2015. During their time they played gigs with Hamilton bands, Conway, The Goth and The Pixie, The Hollow Grinders and the New Millennium Beatnicks, in addition to Auckland’s Invisible Threads, Carb on Carb, I.E. Crazy and Palmerston North’s Man In Rug. The band ended when singer Sam Brockelsby left NZ for Germany.
Post-Ancient Tapes, Schott has returned to recording as sink \ sink, and plays live for birds of passage.
