The Hollow Grinders proclaimed themselves "New Zealand's best and only instrumental surf band", a claim few could deny. They started as a trio of Biff Bangle, Eddie Hodad and Dirk Thrust, later joined by Hank 'Family Man' Special and -- after Biff allegedly faked his own death to avoid further contractual obligations to the group -- Otis Uhh!.

The Hollow Grinders have released one CD, The Hollow Grinders Dig Chicks and one 7" record, Bradley's Dunny Crouch. The photo on the cover of the former was taken by Thom of Yokel Ono. They also featured on a 1997 international surf music compilation called Reef Madness.
