WakaChickaWaka was formed in Hamilton in 1996 by songwriter Matt Amoore. The name was derived from the sound a wahwah guitar produces when muted, and first used for a solo Anzac Day gig organised by Mike Miller (Tsunami Band). With additional band members, they recorded a nine track tape in 1996 (at the beat syndicte with Tobin Pescud in exchange for business cards), titled WakaChickaWaka.

The band went through lineup changes later that year, with Simon Saunders departing from guitar duty and taking an active role as designer and publisher of Wakachickawaka promotional material. Hamish Cormack replaced Clare Baker on drums. This new lineup played at several Hamilton parties and at J.B.C. in Hamilton. Wakachickawaka made two further recordings (one of which has been lost) at another homestudio garage. These were live recordings and have not been released. Mike Miller played an active role promoting the band and getting Wakachickawaka's "NotCool" song played regularly on Contact 89FM.
