Carnaby Blue was formed in Hamilton around 1968. Steve Spillane, Stan Lim, Paul Kunac, Paul Middlebrook and John Booth were the original members, with Keith MacMillan replacing Booth, and Mike Abbot replacing Kunac in 1969. A second vocalist Peter Christieson was added soon after that.

The band played in and around Hamilton for around three years, were resident at the Peachgrove Lounge in Peachgrove Rd. They won the Waikato heat of the Battle of the Bands in around 1970.
