Kane Davey was a guitarist for Hamilton band Pugnaut in the mid-1990s. Leaving Hamilton in 2000, in 2003 he formed a band called Woebegone in Wellington. Davey was the songwriter, vocalist and lead guitarist, and Vivian Stewart played bass, guitar, and acted as recording engineer/producer and manager. Woebegone changed their name to Serenna around 2004, and were a fusion of dark/gothic rock, neoclassical and folk elements, often featuring violinists and/or cellists, and had a very strong visual stage presence. Both joined Disjecta Membra in 2007.
