The Bio-Luvals formed for an event called Acoustic Uprising at Downstairs Oranga in 1986, and played 60's inspired blues music (influences included Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and The Doors). They became electric following their first gig. The band included Andrew Ropiha (a.k.a. "Jimmy"; vocals), Chris Moses (guitar), Wa Kupa (bass), Andrew Bell (harmonica) and Bruce Smith (drums), but typically played with between 7 and 8 members. All were students at The University of Waikato, Teachers College (which was a separate entity at that time), and the Waikato Polytechnic. Performances included the University of Waikato's orientation in 1988.
