Book of Martyrs was initially formed in Rotorua by Jonathon Armstrong (drums, vocals), Alan Deare (bass, vocals, guitar) (both formerly of Number Thieves), and Sarah Knight (cello) in 1988. Sarah was later replaced by Stan Jagger (guitars), formerly of Mudpeople, and Justine Francis (violin) when the band moved to Hamilton. They released the tapes Catharsis (1989, in Rotorua) and Purified 7X (1991, in Hamilton) on thier own Bomb Records. Prior to breaking up in 1992, Paul Oakley replaced Jagger. In 1991 they played support to Able Tasmans and Bailter Space

They had the song Will Shiver released on the second Flying Nun/Student Radio Network Freak the Sheep 2 compilation in 1992.

Book of Martyrs - featuring Jonathon, Alan and Justine only - contributed the track The Man that Said to the 1993 compilation Discordia Concors. They briefly reformed at this time to play at the album release party.
