They initially formed as The Spectres, a group of catholic schoolboys from St Johns College, who played covers of songs by The Shadows. The Trends were regulars at a venue called The Three Musicians on Victoria St. They changed their name to The Music Convention when they moved to Auckland in 1966. Under this name they released five singles and one EP, including the soundtrack to Children of the Sun, New Zealand's first ever surf movie.
